An effective dielectric typically contains polar molecules that reorient in external electric field. Such materials when placed between the plates of a capacitor it increases the polarization and the value of the capacitance.

The dielectric constant is the ratio of electrical conductivity with dielectric material and without dielectric material. Nvis 6111 uses this relation for calculating dielectric constant with the help of inbuilt RF signal generator and LCD.
